Write the note for the summer school case
IDK if there is a Summer School this year, but if we want them to use Seed as part of their experience, we need to consider making some onboarding available before the conference starts. Everyone needs a little practice. Bear in mind that the onboarding will perforce be pre-paper release (starting Saturday 12 Sep, per current planning).
Getting all/most/some papers into Seed falls on your team and has until paper release from TAPS close (c.4 weeks min). Anyway, the user needs to lay out expectations, and this is useful to others considering such tests. These things are always easier in a proposal than in reality, so the planning note, which might seem ordinary, has real value. By the time we've addressed the latter, the paper should be built out.
Establish clear methods for measuring outcomes.
More importantly, we need to describe the conditions for success/failure.
Define the structure of the London Conference Exercise.
Also, what the paper lacks at present is a Section with a description of the actual planned trial, the considerations involved. How will we get the papers into Seed. What are the practical issues this raises?
As you note, much of what were mentionming in the paper is known stuff, so we docn't want to reating it at length. Rather we should make short references to the source with appropriately focussed citations.
the tool value is the tool + support materials (whose form may vary by domain/purpose) + community.
Re using ACM papers we need to put in the paper the challenge of re-use, and the effort (as we've discussed) of not just siplhoning DL.ACM traffic. So, description of remediation into Sed and the consideration we've given it is of real worth for the reader.
We also need to describe the work you'll do just to get to the starting point. HT has a history of trying things like this. People always underestimate the `effort': such a term sidesteps a reductive cost calculation. Effort does have a $ cost, but cost isn't the value criterion here.
So, we need to describe what we envisage doing so that at [start day] someone can go into Seed for HT'26 .... and do what? What onboarding is necessary: if no one engages the effort yield little beyond the (itself separately valuable) experience of setting up such a test.
Add a visual to explain how the network of webs work
Shameless learNing point: an image on page #1 (i.e in bottom part of column #2, p1 does help 'engagement'. l sigh. But still, such is the age we are in. Otherwise, I'm not sure we need figure tables though having some idea of what Seed looks like might help the general (and future reader—software lasts less time than we think).
Clarify the role of Creative Commons and introduce the concept of transcopyright within an open network that respects digital rights.
YOU WERE SO RIGHT! Writing the planning note about how conference (and school) participants will use the tool orders the whole paper.
BTW! To avoid the interpretation that this is a commercial act, I believe we must set up an open-source server at the University. Also, will make a strong case about digital rights. Do you think this would be possible?
The server will spin up not only the content, but the identities or sites of the community too! It can't get more academic (and less commercial) than that!
Define and integrate the concept of epistemic labor.
I like the notion of Epistemic Labor. In a world of Networked Knowledge Communities, there will be a lot of effort devoted to knowledge organization. Who is doing that work right now?
Central Platforms are doing the job on behalf of communities, but working towards the attention economy, not human augmentation. (i.e Linkedin tags, creates ontologies, backlinks, etc)

Formulate a precise definition of a network without gravity.
Revise the section on Engelbart’s Augmentation Framework:
Reduce length and improve pedagogical clarity.
Clearly define the augmentation process through step-by-step explanation.
Include a Mermaid diagram to illustrate the process.

Sharpening. We need to be more explicit about where current processes systems fail to implement aspect of hypertext we think importants. We don't need to describe in detail stuff already kmnow 9e.g. published re hypertext) as we can cite it. What we add is our discussion/argumentation as to how use of Seed, or similarly constructed systems, improve current (web) hypertext use.
Augmentation Process
Engelbart defines a Conceptual Framework to augment human intellect.
Augmenting a man's capability to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension suited to his particular needs, and to derive solutions. Increased capability in this respect is understood to mean a combination of the following: more rapid comprehension, better comprehension, the possibility of achieving a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that was previously too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that previously seemed insoluble.
We refer to a way of life in an integrated domain where hunches, cut-and-try, intangibles, and the human "feel for a situation" usefully co-exist with powerful concepts, streamlined terminology and notation, sophisticated methods, and high-powered electronic aids.
The Source of Intelligence
The source of intelligence is not an isolated property of individuals but lies in the hierarchical organization of processes, in which more complex processes build upon simpler ones. This hierarchy of complex processes can be expanded through tools, languages, methodologies, and training.
Accepting the term "intelligence amplification" does not imply any attempt to increase native human intelligence. The term "intelligence amplification" seems applicable to our goal of augmenting the human intellect in that the entity to be produced will exhibit more of what can be called intelligence than an unaided human could; we will have amplified the intelligence of the human by organizing his intellectual capabilities into higher levels of synergistic structuring.
Tools matter because they shape those processes. Software is not merely a container for information; it is an artifact that enables or constrains particular forms of thought, association, and coordination. Our aim is therefore not just to build a repository of content, but to create an infrastructure that improves the processes by which communities construct and revise shared understanding.
Within this framework, software is an artifact shapes how thinking, association, and coordination occur. Software, therefore, should not be treated as a passive repository, but as an active infrastructure that transforms how communities construct, negotiate, and evolve shared understanding.
The Augmentation Process
Based on that framework. We propose a simple process for augmenting an Open Hypertext System (OHS). We argue that shared meaning emerges through a dynamic augmentation process involving at least four recurrent operations:
Recorded dialogues of real-time conversations.
Repository of those recordings
Conversation, through which participants express perspectives and then align on the situation;
Notion creation, through which new concepts are introduced and refined;
Resolved knowledge Emerges. Structure formation, through which knowledge is organized into explicit systems;
Categorization
Reorganization, through which those systems are revised as understanding evolves.
Knowledge is not simply stored and retrieved; it is continuously reconstructed through dialogue, disagreement, reclassification, and reinterpretation. The source of intelligence, then, lies not only in the capacity of individual minds, but in the organization of increasingly complex cooperative processes.
Communities require both fluid spaces for exchange and durable repositories for stabilization. Existing systems tend to split these functions apart: social platforms support immediacy and conversation but provide weak structures for long-term knowledge formation, while knowledge bases preserve structure but often suppress spontaneity, ambiguity, and exploratory interaction. Yet both dimensions are necessary. Conversation builds shared meaning; repositories preserve and extend it.
We define `shared meaning' as the collectively sustained understanding of language, concepts, and relations within an intellectual community. Shared meaning is not an intrinsic property of language, nor does it reside in machines. It emerges through social interaction, interpretive alignment, and repeated collaborative practice.
An effective hypermedia system must therefore integrate conversational flow with structured knowledge work. Humans are especially skilled at making meaningful associations, but current systems do not adequately support the creation, preservation, and transformation of those associations over time.
New Technologies A Network of Distributed Objects
New mature technologies open the augmentation process at scale.
Our claim is that recent advances in distributed systems, cryptographic identity, version control, and peer-to-peer networking make it possible to revisit long-standing hypertext ambitions with a new degree of practical realism. As we demonstrate in seed, open collaboration is possible: following many existing ideas and in production systems such as experiments as SSB, Bitcoin, Git, PGP WOT, and Martin Klepmann, and vector clocks, demonstrated that finally it was possible to build a blend of Augment, Xanadu, and the distributed objects from Alan Kay. Use control keys In response, we propose a model of hypertext without central control, inspired by decentralized computing traditions and by Alan Kay’s broader vision of dynamic, user-shapeable media. In this model:
This approach builds on distributed systems, version-control practices, and cryptographic identity, but its aim is not merely technical decentralization. It is to create the conditions under which communities can coordinate thought without surrendering control of their intellectual environment.
documents are immutable and versioned;
authorship is cryptographically verifiable;
links are persistent, typed, and ideally bidirectional;
content can be transcluded rather than merely copied;
communities can define their own structures, interfaces, and workflows.
